Manuscript assessment

£10-14/thousand words

The Consultancy Report (8–12 pages approx) provides a manuscript with specialist attention and involves a structural critique and a 1.5 hour brainstorm session (including preparation) with the editor post-report. This service is ideal if you have agent or publisher interest, are on the cusp of being published, or are looking for a more hands-on editorial approach.

Mentoring

£70-120/hour

If you are looking for one-on-one support, Mentoring is a great option. You can use it however you want to, whether it’s reading your full MS or just a few scenes; working through Show Don’t Tell; brainstorming your plot; or preparing your submission package.

Marked-up manuscript

£8-12/thousand words

The Interim Read is a read-through of the full MS, plus a 1-page summary, and any editor notes on your manuscript. This service is perfect for returning authors who’ve made revisions and want to know if they’re on the right track but don’t require a report.

Are You Ready to Submit? is a service that looks at your query letter, 1-page synopsis and first 3 chapters – or up to 30 double-spaced pages – to assess whether your package is ready to send to an agent or editor.

Edit Your Novel online course

Learn how to edit your novel the professional way with our new online course.

Over 18 weeks, literary consultants Kathryn Price and Helen Corner-Bryant will show you how to take your novel from draft to agent-ready submission. We’ll introduce you to the techniques used by professional editors based on our time-tested approach to author development, as well as the skills outlined in our essential guide to editing, On Editing. You’ll need to put in up to 10 hours per week to make the most of the course (180 hours over the 18 weeks) – that includes reading and thinking, completing practical exercises, feeding back on your peers’ novels, and contributing to forum discussions. You can work at any time of the day (or night) – you just need to meet the final deadline in each class.

Start Date: 20 September 2021

Course Leader: Kathryn Price

Price: £1,500 + VAT (Early-bird £1,300 + VAT)

Location: Online

Duration: 18 weeks

Format: 7 fortnightly classes, plus final class lasting one month

“This course has saved me months, if not years, of extraneous writing and tinkering. My tutor, Kathryn, nudged me towards a large-scale structural edit which led to a culling from 115K to around 70K words as I write this. If nothing else, this course had been worth the money for that one, critical piece of advice.

Almost at the finish line and with some expert self-editing from these brilliant classes, already I notice my writing is becoming tighter, more professional and I’ve teased out the story I’ve been trying to tell all along. Thank you for a cracker of a course.”
